Pride Corpus Christi Board Members Attend Grassroots Radio Conference in New Orleans

Recently, members of the Pride Corpus Christi board attended the 2024 Grassroots Radio Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. This exciting event brought together community radio activists from across the nation to share experiences, knowledge, and strategies for using radio as a platform for social justice and community empowerment. Representing Pride Corpus Christi were Jonathan Swindle, President, and Robert Kymes, Vice President, alongside board members Randy Stubbs and Jerry Cantu.

One of the most inspiring takeaways from the conference was the opportunity to learn about WHIV FM, the hosting station in New Orleans, which also serves as the home to the New Orleans Pride Center. Through their joint mission of social justice and equality, WHIV and the Pride Center have successfully collaborated in amplifying community voices and talents. This relationship resonated deeply with our own endeavors in 2024, as we strive to establish our radio station, Unity 89.1 FM, as a platform for the LGBTQIA+ community here in Corpus Christi.

The conference provided us with valuable insights on how to increase visibility, create opportunities, and build stronger connections within the community. It reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring Unity 89.1 FM becomes a beacon for local talent, voices, and stories. Though we continue to face challenges in constructing a transmitting tower for our station, we remain dedicated to overcoming these barriers and growing our station’s reach.

We were also inspired by the excitement and passion of the New Orleans community, and we left feeling more determined than ever to carry the banner forward here at home. The work being done by WHIV and the New Orleans Pride Center gave us a clear vision of what’s possible for Unity 89.1 FM and Pride Corpus Christi.

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to The Hidden Door for their ongoing support in promoting Unity 89.1 FM. Their backing has been crucial in raising awareness for our station. The Hidden Door has proudly displayed our Unity 89.1 FM banner, which includes a QR code to stream the station and listen to our diverse content online.

As we continue to build this important project, we’re excited about the future and the new connections and opportunities that lie ahead. Together, with the support of our community, we are committed to growing Unity 89.1 FM into a station that reflects the vibrant, diverse, and talented voices of the LGBTQIA+ community in Corpus Christi.

Stay tuned and join us as we take the next steps in making Unity 89.1 FM a powerful platform for progress and pride!
