Queer Voices Take Center Stage This Pride Month in the Coastal Bend
May 28, 2025There’s something undeniably powerful about live theatre—the way a single spotlight, a voice in motion, and an audience leaning forward can create a moment of truth that stays with you long after the curtain falls. Theatre invites us not only to witness stories, but to feel them, to reflect on our own, and to see each other more clearly. For generations, the stage has also been a sanctuary for LGBTQ voices—a space where queer artists and audiences have gathered not just for entertainment, but for truth, connection, and affirmation in a world that too often tries to silence them.
This Pride Month, two extraordinary local productions do exactly that—offering moving, musical, and fiercely human glimpses into queer identity, resilience, and self-discovery. As we celebrate love, diversity, and visibility across the Coastal Bend, supporting LGBTQIA+ storytelling on our local stages is one of the most meaningful ways to honor the spirit of Pride.

Before *RENT* changed the face of musical theatre, Jonathan Larson was just another struggling composer in New York City—living in a tiny apartment, waiting tables, and wondering if his dream was slipping away. *Tick, Tick… Boom!* is the semi-autobiographical musical Larson wrote about that exact moment in his life: a moment filled with artistic anxiety, self-doubt, and the relentless ticking of the clock.
Set in 1990, the show follows Jon, a young composer approaching his 30th birthday, who is caught between the allure of a stable career and the burning need to pursue his art. As friends move on, relationships evolve, and the AIDS crisis looms in the background, Jon grapples with the question so many queer creatives face: What does it mean to make something meaningful—before time runs out?
With a driving rock score and dynamic three-person cast, *Tick, Tick… Boom!* pulses with energy, vulnerability, and passion. It’s a love letter to theatre, to creative ambition, and to the raw emotional power of being seen. Larson’s gift for fusing pop-rock with heart-wrenching honesty is on full display here, offering the same soul-stirring intensity that would later define his Pulitzer Prize-winning *RENT*.
Port Aransas Community Theatre (PACT) has made it a tradition to honor Pride Month with productions that reflect LGBTQIA+ voices and experiences. Past seasons have included The Laramie Project and 3 Lesbians Eating a Quiche—bold, nuanced stories that challenge and uplift. This year’s production of *Tick, Tick… Boom!* continues that tradition, featuring not only the show itself but an immersive walk-through exhibit of Jonathan Larson’s life, from childhood dreams to Broadway legacy.
This is more than a show—it’s a celebration of queer creativity, a meditation on legacy, and a reminder that sometimes the ticking clock is not a warning—it’s a call to act.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Aurora Arts Theatre has consistently shown its commitment to bold and inclusive storytelling, with past productions including RENT and other works that give voice to LGBTQIA+ characters and communities. Their stage is a space where queer stories are not only told—but celebrated.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a boundary-breaking rock musical that tells the story of Hedwig Schmidt—a genderqueer East German singer who survives betrayal, heartbreak, and a botched gender reassignment surgery to reclaim her voice through radical honesty and fierce self-expression. With a live band and fourth-wall-breaking storytelling, Hedwig takes the audience on an electrifying journey of love, identity, and transformation. It’s a show that defies genre and gender, blending camp, catharsis, and pure punk-rock power.
What makes Hedwig endure—more than its glam-rock aesthetic or cult status—is the universal truth at its core: the longing to be whole, to be seen, and to belong. It’s not just a show about gender, queerness, or trauma—it’s about what it means to be human.
Aurora Arts Theatre has long made space for stories that reflect the lives and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community, with past productions including RENT and other narratives centered on identity, belonging, and resistance. Their stage has become a trusted home for voices that challenge, uplift, and inspire—and this year’s production of *Hedwig* is no exception.
Director Laurie Guajardo shared,
“Going into this production we knew the challenge ahead of us. Hedwig has always been a controversial show in its groundbreaking portrayal of trans-ness. However, Hedwig is so much more than a show about queer representation. Hedwig is universal. It transcends boundaries and unifies us in its depiction of one’s trauma and how it echoes throughout a life. Most of us can relate to a story about growing up in a world out of our control and struggling to find our own place and identity in it. Hedwig’s message is filled with passion, resilience, and stark vulnerability that draws us in and sets us free.”
This production of *Hedwig and the Angry Inch* promises not just an unforgettable night of theatre, but a raw and revelatory experience—one that dares us to look inward, laugh hard, cry freely, and walk away feeling just a little more whole.
Together, these two productions embody the spirit of Pride: courageous, creative, and unapologetically queer. They are perfect reflections of the LGBTQIA+ experience—stories of struggle, self-discovery, and empowerment told with heart and boldness on stage.
And these are just the beginning.
This June, Pride Corpus Christi is proud to present over 30 opportunities to celebrate Pride—right here in our own backyard—thanks to the incredible outpouring of support, talent, and diversity from our community. This is what a true Pride Month celebration looks like.
