Defending Our Representation: The Fight for LGBTQIA+ Visibility in Our Public Libraries

The Corpus Christi library system has long been a haven for knowledge, culture, and diversity. It is a space where all members of our community, regardless of their background, can find resources that reflect their identities and experiences. However, this fundamental principle is now under threat. The current library board, with the support of certain city council members, is attempting to remove LGBTQIA+ representation from our taxpayer-funded public libraries.

What’s Happening?

In recent months, there have been concerted efforts to revise the library’s collection development policies in ways that specifically target and diminish LGBTQIA+ content. According to the “Edited Collection Development Policy,” these revisions focus on limiting materials that address diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions under the guise of protecting minors or adhering to so-called “community standards.”

Moreover, the updated policy documents suggest a move to increase the discretion of certain board members and external groups—such as Citizens Defending Freedom—over what materials are deemed “appropriate” for the public. Citizens Defending Freedom, a group that includes the local chapter of Moms for Liberty, which has been recognized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, is actively organizing these efforts. This is not just about restricting books or resources; it’s about erasing the presence and stories of the LGBTQIA+ community from public view.

Who’s Behind This?

This effort has significant backing from city council members Gil Hernandez, Mike Pusley, and Michael Hunter. These elected officials are using their positions to support policies that undermine the inclusivity and diversity that our library system has always strived to uphold. By aligning with these efforts, they are sending a clear message that LGBTQIA+ voices are less valuable and less deserving of representation.

Why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Matters

DEI is not just a buzzword—it’s a critical framework that ensures all community members have equal access to resources, opportunities, and representation. Public libraries are vital in promoting DEI by offering materials that reflect the full spectrum of human experiences, including those of the LGBTQIA+ community. Removing LGBTQIA+ content from libraries would not only diminish the richness of our shared cultural resources but also harm the individuals who rely on these materials for education, support, and connection.

Studies consistently show that inclusive environments—whether in schools, workplaces, or public institutions—lead to better outcomes for everyone. When individuals see themselves reflected in the media they consume, it fosters a sense of belonging and validation. For LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially youth, access to affirming resources can be life-saving.

What Can You Do?

This is a crucial moment for our community. We must stand up and show that we will not allow the erasure of LGBTQIA+ voices from our public spaces. It’s essential to vote for candidates who support our community and uphold the principles of diversity and inclusion. The upcoming city council election on November 5th is our opportunity to hold those in power accountable.

Your vote is your voice—use it to defend the values that make our community strong. Showing up at city council meetings is equally important. We encourage all citizens of Corpus Christi to attend these meetings and share public comment about your concerns. You can also share public comment by emailing the city council directly. Let’s make it clear that we will not stand by while our rights and representation are stripped away.
