When Vanessa Edwards Foster first discovered the word “transsexual” through tennis legend Renee Richards in 1976, she had no idea that decades later she’d be sitting across from members of Congress, lobbying for transgender rights and protections. Her journey from those early days of isolation to becoming a founding voice in national transgender advocacy is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of living authentically in the Coastal Bend and beyond.

Vanessa’s story is deeply rooted in our community. Growing up in the 1960s and navigating her identity through the seventies and eighties, she attended Fantasia Fair in Provincetown and explored Houston’s vibrant drag scene at The Exile in the late 1980s. What makes her path so remarkable is how an unexpected turn—losing her job after rapid feminization in 1996—launched her into activism she never planned but embraced wholeheartedly. She founded the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition in 1999 and spent two decades working tirelessly in Washington and Austin, finding common ground even with unlikely allies and successfully lobbying Republican Warren Chisum to support hate crimes legislation with groundbreaking gender nonconformity language.

Her advocacy work brought her face-to-face with families like Gwen Araujo’s, and she collaborated with legendary activist Sylvia Rivera on memorials and vigils. Through it all, Vanessa learned the art of effective lobbying—staying calm, listening deeply, and using personal stories to connect authentically with legislators. Her accomplishments weren’t just political victories; they were about changing hearts and minds, one conversation at a time.

After returning to Corpus Christi in 2018, Vanessa ultimately made the difficult decision to relocate to Costa Rica, but her impact on our community remains immeasurable. You can watch her full oral history and hear more of her incredible journey at Our Community Lives, where she shares wisdom, memories, and reflections on decades of advocacy work.

Vanessa’s story is one of many that make up the vibrant tapestry of LGBTQ+ life in the Coastal Bend. Do you have memories to share?
